Well, since I had to cancel last month’s open water swim due to illness, I’ve just added a couple of new events to my calendar to fill the late summer/early fall void.
This will double my last open water distance to 1 mile and conveniently take place at the local Stevens Creek Reservoir. I had briefly considered instead doing the 1.2 mile swim at Santa Cruz (think: cold, choppy, salty, shark-infested ocean water) in the same series, though ultimately decided that would be biting off a bit more than I could chew. Baby steps.
The race is officially called the Half Moon Bay International Marathon, but I’m participating in the much shorter concurrent 10K. Other options included the half marathon and the 5K fun run. Since I’ve been devoting so much time to working on swimming this summer, I haven’t built up the miles to wholeheartedly compete in a marathon or even a half marathon in just a few weeks. Besides, I’m considering doing a half marathon later in the fall, possibly the Big Sur half in mid-November.
