Quandary: Earl’s 43rd birthday is today, I haven’t purchased him a present, and the nearest gift shop is 3 hospital floors away.
Solution: Homemade gifts
Present #1: Earliest possible hospital discharge
Dr. Orman originally cautioned that I would be kept in the hospital for 5-7 days. Today is day 5, and if it weren’t for the fact that we all wanted to carefully monitor the health of the new breast during its most crucial period, I’ve apparently bounced back so well I could have otherwise left days ago. From what Dr. Orman and the nurses have been saying, I think I might hold a hospital record for quickest TRAM recovery. I should be returning home before noon.
Present #2: Totally clear pathology report
I received the final pathology report this morning and what a huge relief. Dr. Bitar removed an 11.1 x 5.0 cm ellipse of skin and underlying fatty tissue, including the entire 7.0 cm mastectomy scar. Dr. Orman also removed an incidental mammary lymph node while performing his portion of Friday’s operation. Neither specimen showed any sign of carcinoma. Time to celebrate!
